You can write…
Anyone can write! Just write to be a writer. Just sing and you
are the one. I am addressing these statements to my dear students. Trust me,
thousand miles journey begins with your first step. It is step after step …
into a million steps. Did you just wonder
standing in the corner of a library as to how those thousands of books with
millions of words were ever written?
Would you like to end up reading others books and keep wondering? Why don’t you give a try and even more, write
yourself?
Graham Greene, one of the influential
writers and novelists of 20th century once said, ’I often wonder how
all those who do not write, paint or compose can escape the madness which is
inherent in human condition’. The urge
and ability to write, paint, design, sing, dance and a host of others is there
in all of us deep down. Some of us make it happen during lifetime and yet some
of us reach graveyard with so much of music still left in us!
Let us take up writing for the time
being and see what baby steps you and I can take.
· Follow the writers:
Identify the writers who you like to ‘model’. Initially put your tiny
steps in the frame of giant steps of your favorite writers. To win in life, you need to think like
winners. Writing includes all short
stories, commentary, news papers articles, letter and a whole lot of it. Just replicate your ‘heroes’ and make the one
yourself. Your first creation should please you immensely. Consider it as your ‘best seller’! Once you have done this, do not stop may what
come. Persist writing even though you do
not receive any acknowledgment or appreciation.
That you are doing something which millions cannot do, should be a
matter of celebration.
· Train yourself: Writing is a comprehensive and huge
task. You have to learn grammar, sentence construction, expression, spelling,
impacting etc systematically. It takes time and the beauty is that in the
meantime and along with preparation ‘you can write’. Please come out that
obsession that one should know everything to be able to do everything!
· Dare to fail: Your writing may not see the light
of the day but it doesn’t matter. One day it will. Keep making notes and value
them as if they are your published material. A day comes when someone asks for
it! Your manuscript will one day be the
master piece. Keep polishing your writing until it is ready to come to
limelight. Some of the great works had to wait for decades for reasons of
opposition, non acceptance and so on. The tunnel will come to the end soon.
