‘Ten Commandments’ for Management Students
‘Ten Commandments’ for
Management Students
It is not enough if you have great
qualities; you need have a great management of them too. In a span of two years,
a management student may study about 30 independent subjects in Indian context.
Looking at the volume of inputs that goes into the management course, it is
well nigh impossible to assimilate that voluminous text all in one frame of
time. You can add value to your
management education by valuing the following aspects/pursuits.
- Follow the content as a story and even enjoy it! When a new area of knowledge is introduced, force yourself into considering it as precious and important.
- Be in touch with news items touching upon your subject. Your text is not up to date but news that provide context is! Jot down talking points that you come across in dailies, news channels and other sources.
- Participate and make your presence felt. Make every session an event to participate. Ask questions, seek clarifications and that is the only way to make best of your investment on management education.
- Writing notes in the class room is an art and do it as creatively as you can. Find out your own way of reducing a given talk into a narrative.
- Recall key points of all subjects covered during a day before you retire for the day. It may look like tedious but it must be done if you want mastery over a subject.
- Listen to TED talks as often as you must. Listening to inspiring talks helps you open up.
- Do your project work as diligently as you must. Students are generally tempted to find ‘short cuts’ to ‘get rid of’ of the rigour of completing a project work. Project assignment is an opportunity to know the corporate and business world in close quarters.
- Participate in management events and gain an insight into working together and reaching out. You learn what it takes to lead in such outside participation.
- Hone your communication, presentation and reporting skills as you pursue your course. Language is said to be dress of thoughts. Your success and utility as an employee/entrepreneur depends much on your communication abilities. Make use of every opportunity to pull yourself up whenever occasions beckon you.
- Flex your writing skills right away. Follow some of your favourite writers and flow with them for a while. Write you must. It is your born right! Why do you always have to read others? Why don’t you make them read yours!?
