How do you introduce a guest to the gathering?

Image
If a guest speaker ever made a special request to the organizers that he would introduce himself to the gathering rather than being introduced, there may be a sound reason for that. One of compelling reasons could be that he was not happy the way he was introduced on previous occasions. I used to observe a senior colleague of mine in my earlier banking service, insisting on self introduction as a pre-condition for delivering talks. Once I asked him whether this kind of insistence did not amount to disrespect to the organizers and especially to the one who would be looking forward to doing this job. My colleague shared with me the reason that evening. He is a highly qualified person with four MA degrees in the string of at least a dozen qualifications. It seems the introducer went on to say,   ‘ …. I am happy to say that so and so appeared for his MA degree four times!’ My friend who was the Personnel Manager must have felt humiliated in front of new batch of officers who were ...

Taking down notes? Note the following…

Image
Now as students and down the line as anybody, there is a compelling need to write notes. You may be a student listening to regular lectures, frequent talks or a part of the team working on a certain project. Lot many knowledge inputs are bound to flow and roll down. Do you want to lap them op or just let them go into oblivion? The choice is yours. I strongly suggest that you partake the benefits by way of making notes. How to make that possible? Just take down, write down and then get down to task. Make it a point to carry a note book wherever you go. You will be so much richer if you could preserve such notes for long.   If you have such notes written over the years, just browse through a few pages and see its utility and flavour in the light of present times. I can tell you friends, it is great delight to see what you scribbled coming handy now.   Making notes is an art by itself.   It should not take too much of your time or the paper. It should be the sense and e...

Create an environment inside the child’s mind where the joy of discovering the unknown begins!

Parenting tips during lock-down: Create an environment inside the child’s mind where the joy of discovering the unknown begins ! It’s necessary for you as parents to know the kind of interaction your child prefers while learning at home. You should also know the kind of learner your child is. I was talking to a group of parents regarding how kids motivated themselves to learn at home. I observed that 9 out of 10 parents faced challenges to sustain interest and attention of their kids to learn at home. Most of the parents of LKG kids shared their experiences that their kids were not doing well in dictation writing and they got feedback from the school to practice dictation writing at home regularly. But the problem seems to be that kids are busy with mobile phones or TV at home. They don’t have interests to study at home after coming from school. Let me share my small experiment and observation with my son who is studying in LKG. He was not doing well in dictation writing too...

How to talk so that people listen?

Image
Poor listening acts as a big block to effective presentation.   Good speakers are not daunted by this.   They rather challenge this block in a unique and creative way.   Best speeches in this world are always in spite of barriers rather than not without them. Some of the ways in which we can overcome the hurdle and make people listen are as follows: Provoke them : Begin your speech with a kind of jolt or shock to the audience. It should not be dull and drab affair. Make the audience members sit alert with your kind of presence and impact. Sometimes you can throw down a challenge to them and say how you would help them achieve it. Compliment them : It is the key to receive their attention. No one in this world is deaf to compliments!  The compliment must be honest and specific.  The more specific you make it, the more effective it will be. 'I am delighted to be here. I am indeed proud to have to address an audience of this kind…….' These sentence...

Lock down is not break down: Tasks you get down!

‘Tough times don’t last, Tough people do’ – Robert Schuller   During times of challenges and constraints every nation rises. India however has the record of doing so creditably several times. As a nation we rose from strength to strength in an exemplary way. Remember the 2008-2009 global financial crises and how India came out unscathed. This time around, the scenario is all the more threatening. While the government has so far anchored us in good stead in fighting Corona virus spread, we individuals have responsible role to play. All that the government has asked you and me   is to remain indoors. The medical, police, administrative and several agencies are out in the open fighting the evil and protecting the citizenry.   Like others, you students are also compelled to stay indoors. While you cannot violate the norms of ‘lockdown’, you need not take it as ‘breakdown’ and remain in hibernation! Winners don’t do different things, they do things differently. ...

What Students ought to be doing during this lockdown period?

Many a professional, employee and student may be expressing   helplessness over their ‘confinement’ till at least April 15, 2020. I often wonder why at least our management students not do the following instead of throwing hands in the air?   You are a witness to present working styles in corporate.   About 60% of work could be done back at home. In the days to come this trend will catch up in every quarter. Talking about students, the scenario is no different. Present era is agog with distance learning, virtual learning, conferencing and so on. It is true that class room teaching has its own flavor. An empowered teacher can deliver lessons irrespective of whether he is inside the class room or away from it. The present Corona Clampdown is a test for students and teachers alike. While a creative and committed teacher can enlighten students where he is and with what he has, energized students can move to new, challenging frontiers and try their hands. There ...
